Winter Preparations

Should I stay or should I go?  The first day of winter is approaching and animals are getting ready for the cold months ahead.  Learn how they prepare for winter using different strategies including migration, hibernation and staying active. We will start out inside and then venture outside for a 0.9 mile hike over rolling terrain. If there is snow on the ground we will snowshoe approximately one-half mile. Snowshoes will be provided to program participants. Ages 10+.

Cunning Coyote

Did you ever hear a coyote howl? Do you wonder where they are going or what they might be doing? Come find answers to these questions and more at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center. We will start inside with a short talk about the history and biology of the eastern coyote then hike 0.9 mile in the Preserve as we pause for coyote signs and explore the habitat of one of the smartest, most elusive animals in the Pine Bush. All ages.

Winter Solstice Hike

Daylight has waned to a minimum on the shortest day of the year.  What better time for an evening hike through the Albany Pine Bush Preserve?  Join us for a 0.9 mile hike as the sun sets on the shortest day of the year. We will also explore how nocturnal animals utilize the nighttime for their survival. Our hike will conclude with hot cocoa.  All ages. Free!

7th Annual Cookie Burner Stroll

Looking for a way to work off those cookies and other holiday treats?  Our “cookie burner stroll” is a fun way to get outside for some fresh air and exercise.  We will hike 2.6 miles over rolling terrain through the Karner Barrens East region of the Albany Pine Bush, taking breaks along the way for rest and water (if needed).  If there is snow, we will snowshoe approximately one mile! Snowshoes will be provided to program participants. Ages 10+.

Wildlife in Winter: Subnivean Zone

Go below the snow! When the air is cold and there is snow on the ground it may seem like nothing is alive but the space between the ground and the snow surface can be full of life. This space is called the Subnivean Zone. Come explore this special habitat and learn about the animals that depend on it. We will start indoors and then head outside to hike approximately one-half mile. Families with children 10 and under.

Geese fly south, chipmunks hibernate, frogs bury in the mud but what do insects do in the cold, dry months of winter? All of the above! Come join us for an indoor presentation to explore the ways our six-legged friends survive the winter. We’ll then head out for a 0.9 mile hike to search for signs of them overwintering. All ages.

Do you have what it takes to be on a team of nature investigators, solving Pine Bush mysteries, by examining evidence?  Join us for a 30 minute indoor introduction followed by a 0.9 mile outdoor trek to look for clues and evidence of what lives in the Pine Bush. All ages.

Wildlife in Winter: Deep Freeze

Frogs are silent during these cold and snowy months, the curved shape of turtles can’t be seen on the logs in the wetland, and no snakes can be heard moving through the brush. Amphibians and reptiles have unique ways to survive through the winter weather.  Join us for this program and learn why we call it “deep freeze”.  Please be prepared for the weather, as we will be hiking approximately one mile. Ages 10+.

Think you saw a WHAT? Visit our ID Lab and identify your natural mystery or build skills for your next adventure.  All ages can participate in our newest exhibit.  Discover guided and self-led activities, consult expert hosts, submit your mystery photos or use our field guides to identify your pine bush sightings.  This exhibit will be open during regular operating hours through December 2015. Take your Pine Bush knowledge to the next level!

New Year Bird Count

Start a new tradition this winter and join us for our sixth annual Kids’ New Year Bird Count. We will start inside with an introduction to bird watching and then head outside to count and identify birds we see along the trails. Our program will finish up with hot cocoa and the final tally for the day. A fun morning for beginning birders! Please dress warmly. Binoculars will be provided. Ages 6+.Free!
