Hug a Tree

Calling all kids!!  Would you know what to do if you were outside playing or hiking and became lost?  If you’re not sure, this program is for you. Hug a Tree was developed to teach children a few of the most basic and vital survival principles. It was specifically designed for children between the ages of 6 and 12 but can be effective with slightly younger and older children. We will start with an indoor presentation and demonstrations (including a rescue dog!), followed by an outside presentation and 0.9 mile hike. All ages.

Come and learn about one of your most common neighbors, the American Crow. Join Beth Bidwell and her crow, Mojo, as you learn about one of the smartest animals on the planet. The program will include a reading from Beth’s new children’s book, Mojo, the Fabulous (Talking!!) Crow. Meet Mojo, an unreleasable crow and the star of the book. Learn about the similarities between humans and crows. For example, did you know that crows have funerals? Perhaps Mojo will even say “Hello”! Signed copies of Beth’s book will be available for $10 after the program. Ages 5+.

Science Lecture Series: The World of Mosquitoes

Dr. Gary Torrisi is currently involved in a two year survey of mosquito species found in the Albany Pine Bush. Comparative results will be documented using archival specimens located at the Albany Museum dating back to 1904-1905 and throughout the past century. Join us this evening as Dr. Torrisi provides listeners with basic mosquito information that reflects global, US, and New York State data. In addition, he will review the historical influence that mosquitoes have played on human history, and discuss important diseases vectored by mosquitoes. Ages 15+. Free!

TRAIL CLOSURE: Madison Avenue Pinelands #7

Starting on Monday, November 16, 2015 the yellow, purple and white trails in the Madison Avenue Pinelands region of the Preserve (access from trailhead #7 at the end of Madison Ave. Ext.) will be CLOSED while tree thinning work continues on 85 acres. This region will be closed from November 16, 2015 until March 18, 2016. Please do not enter this area for any reason while tree removal equipment is working to restore this part of the Preserve. Please visit any of the other 17 miles of trails in the Preserve during this time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Vultures of the Pine Bush

Vernal Equinox Hike

Today is the Vernal Equinox! What better way to welcome the first days of spring, than to get outside for a walk in the Pine Bush?  We’ll walk 0.9 miles, stopping to look for signs of the season. All ages.

Full Moon Frog Watch

The birds may not be back yet but the frogs are singing! Spring peepers and wood frogs will likely be the stars of the show. Join us this evening for a hike to listen to our spring chorus and document it for submission to Frog Watch, a citizen science program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that has been operating for over 15 years. Then take that knowledge home to submit data about frogs and toads calling in your own backyard! We will meet at the Discovery Center and caravan to the Kings Road trailhead (#9) for a 1.2 mile hike. Participants must provide their own transportation. Ages 15+. Free!

Scoop on Poop

Did you know you can tell what animal has passed your way by examining the evidence they leave behind? Scat (also known as poop!) tells us a great deal about an animal, including what kind of animal left the scat and what that animal ate. Please be prepared for the weather, as we will be taking an approximately one-half mile hike. Ages 6+.

Fox Trot

Join us for a short inside presentation on the two species of fox that live here in the Pine Bush. We will then continue outside for a 0.9 mile hike to look for signs that they are out and about around the trails. Ages 6+.
