Science Lecture Series – Pitch Pine Scrub Oak Barrens Restoration and Management 101

Managing globally rare pitch pine scrub oak barrens and habitat for 63 wildlife species of greatest conservation need after nearly a century of fire suppression is an incredibly complex undertaking.  In his presentation, Conservation Director Neil Gifford will review the techniques being used by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission to meet its goal of restoring a healthy barrens. He will also explain some of the research we conduct to determine if our methods are working. Ages 15+. Free!

Wild and Wiley Turkeys

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to turkeys! Come discover the life of wild turkeys in the Pine Bush and learn about turkey sounds, flight, habitat and the bird that almost became our national symbol. We will start indoors for a brief introduction then continue outside with a 0.9 mile hike over rolling terrain to search for signs of turkey in their habitat. At the end of the program, each participant will have the chance to make a turkey call craft. All ages.

Waddle Walk

Looking for a way to work off those yummy holiday treats? Our “waddle walk” is a fun way to get outside for some fresh air and vigorous exercise. We will hike 2.6 miles over rolling terrain through the Karner Barrens East region of the Albany Pine Bush, taking breaks along the way for rest and water (if needed). If there is snow, we will snowshoe 0.9 miles! Snowshoes will be provided to program participants. Ages 8+.

Would you like to learn more about white-tailed deer in the Albany Pine Bush? Come and join us for an afternoon program on the largest mammal in the Pine Bush. We will start inside with a short introduction to deer anatomy and behavior and then continue outside for a 0.9 mile hike looking for signs of deer in their habitat. Ages 6+.

Cunning Coyotes

Did you ever hear a coyote howl? Do you wonder where they are going or what they might be doing? Come find answers to these questions and more at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center. We will start inside with a short talk about the history and biology of the eastern coyote then hike 0.9 mile in the Preserve as we pause for coyote signs and explore the habitat of one of the smartest, most elusive animals in the Pine Bush. Ages 6+

Feisty Fishers

Are fishers cats? Do they really eat fish? Come find answers to these questions and more at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center. We will start inside with a short talk about the history and biology of the fisher. Then we will continue outside for a walk in the Preserve as we look for signs of the fisher. We plan to walk approximately one mile. Ages 6+.

Winter Prep

Should I stay or should I go? The first day of winter is approaching and animals are getting ready for the cold months ahead. Learn how they prepare for winter using different strategies including migration, hibernation and staying active. We will start out inside and then venture outside for a 0.9 mile hike over rolling terrain. If there is snow on the ground we will snowshoe approximately one-half mile. Snowshoes will be provided to program participants. Ages 10+.

Full Moon Hike

Enjoy the Pine Bush at night with an hour long hike under the full moon. We will plan to walk 0.9 miles over rolling topography stopping intermittently for night vision and sound observations. All ages.

CSI: Critter Scene Investigation

How are your detective skills? Do you have what it takes to be on a team of nature investigators, solving Pine Bush mysteries, by examining evidence? Join us for a 30 minute indoor introduction followed by a 0.9 mile outdoor trek to look for clues and evidence of what lives in the Pine Bush. All ages.

Daylight has waned to a minimum on the shortest day of the year. What better time for an evening hike through the Albany Pine Bush Preserve? Join us for a 0.9 mile hike as the sun sets on the shortest day of the year. We will also explore how nocturnal animals utilize the nighttime for their survival. Our hike will conclude with hot cocoa. All ages. Free!

Pine Bush Science Lab: Crystals

Are there crystals in the Pine Bush? Crystals come in a huge range of sizes and can be made of many different materials. Join us as we learn about crystals in nature and try to discover some, right here in the Pine Bush. This program will primarily take place indoors, though we will be going outside for approximately 10 minutes. Ages 6+.

Pine Bush Science Lab: Groundwater Exploration

Hidden from sight beneath the surface, water percolates and flows underground in the Pine Bush. Join us for an afternoon exploration of underground water called “groundwater.” Using an interactive groundwater model, we will demonstrate groundwater flow and learn about groundwater’s crucial role in the hydrologic cycle. Concepts including groundwater pollution, porosity and permeability, aquifers, water quality and the interrelationship of groundwater and surface water will be discussed. Ages 6+.

Have you ever written down on paper something you observed? Have you ever recorded a measurement like your height on the wall? If you have, you’ve collected data! Keeping a record of observations, measurements or other information (called “data”) can help us discover new things about our world. In this program we will discuss the different kinds of data collected at the Pine Bush, data you might collect, ways to keep your data organized, and create your own notebook in which you can record data. Ages 8+.

Pine Bush Science Lab: Microscope Magic

8th Annual Cookie Burner Stroll

Curious about owls? Join us to learn about the owls that live in the Pine Bush and the signs they leave behind. We will start with a short presentation and then dissect owl pellets, a sign that owls are active in the area. Ages 8+.

Karner Station: SPECIAL EXHIBIT

All Aboard…Next Stop Karner Station

Gain exclusive access to the world of the Karner blue butterfly in the latest special exhibit at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center.  This extraordinary exhibit called Karner Station will take wing on June 3rd.

The adventure begins, near the old whistle stop at Karner Train Station, where the remarkable Karner blue butterfly was first documented.  Moving along the tracks, visitors explore the important world of this federally-endangered butterfly; including how it was discovered, what makes it unique, where it lives, what the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission is doing to protect it, and how you can help.
