Now in its 19th year, the Hidden Garden Tour is a fundraiser to benefit Troy’s Prospect Park. In previous years, the event attracted more than 700 tourgoers. This year attendance is expected to be even higher because of the growing excitement and interest in Troy. There’s always plenty of room for more!
The self-guided walking tour features approx. 30 private backyard gardens in the Historic Sage College, Washington Park and adjoining neighborhoods of downtown Troy.
“Most people only ever see the facades of our brownstones from the streets,” said Peter Grimm, president of the Friends of Prospect Park. “This is a special kind of event that invites visitors into the hidden, green spaces of our city. It really showcases the humanity and livability of Troy.”
While most of the gardens are approximately the same size, about 20 feet by 30 feet, they vary greatly in style. Some of the gardens feature charming pathways, fountains and pools. Some are filled with flowers, while others have more plants and vegetables — all lovingly tended by gardeners of all skill levels.

Downtown Initiative Revitalization Granting Process
City of Troy
May 23, 3:00, 5:00, or 7:00pm
City Hall, 433 River St.
The Downtown Revitalization Round Three Initiative will invest $10 million in each of 10 communities ripe for development to transform them into vibrant communities where tomorrow’s workforce will want to live, work and raise families. In 2018, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative will again support a community planning process where each community develops the key ingredients needed for successful downtown revitalization:
* A clear vision for the downtown; * Goals and strategies to accomplish the vision; * An action plan with a timeline for projects, initiatives, and actions; and * A strategic investment plan with catalytic projects to implement the plan.
Each Regional Council will solicit interest in the program from communities in the region, accepting revised applications from communities that requested consideration in 2017, and new applications from communities that didn’t participate last year.
The meetings will be held during three separate times to accommodate Community Member’s schedules. Join the discussion about downtown revitalization efforts in Troy, NY! Come to the Troy City Hall; the more community support, the higher the chances for granting approval.
DRI awards will reinforce and secure additional public and private investments within and near downtown neighborhoods, and build upon growth spurred by the Regional Councils.
Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled Small Space Gardening on Thursday, May 24th at 3PM, prior to the Friends’ of Prospect Park’s Hidden Garden Tour.
Gardening in a small space has its limits, but it need not be limiting. In a small garden, the gardener can pay attention to detail. You can keep on top of maintenance, while still having time to sit and enjoy your small garden. In fact, many small space gardens are designed around entertaining and sitting areas. Virtually any plant or garden style can be worked into a small garden space. Learn how to choose your site, develop your plant list and how to use gardening principles on a smaller scale.
Join your neighbors at the Downtown Troy Neighborhood Group. All are invited to attend and bring their ideas and concerns to help improve the downtown community. A great opportunity for new and old residents, business owners and community leaders to work together for a better downtown!
As part of a phased implementation plan for parking improvements in Troy’s Central Business District, Mayor Patrick Madden announced the City of Troy will make significant upgrades to the downtown parking network beginning in May 2018.
The first phase of enhancements include the upgrade of all existing parking meters, deploying upgraded kiosks to high-demand areas, reconfigured parking hours to encourage outer district parking, creation of dedicated visitor parking, improved public parking wayfinding signage, and launch of online payment options for metered street parking. View the link on The City of Troy website for more details.
The Downtown Troy Business Improvement District Foundation requests your support to grow Troy’s urban tree canopy with the Raise . Plant . Grow initiative. The initiative will raise funds to plant up to 150 trees in downtown Troy, and will take place in stages as funds become available.
The first step will include clearing dead or dying trees, and removing stumps from existing tree wells. Once these tree wells are cleaned, in the fall and/or spring, new trees may be planted. The Downtown Troy BID beautification staff will mange watering of the trees. Planting has already begun on Fulton Street during The Early Day Block Party in April 2018, we are excited to continue raising funds for more planting!
In our efforts to make the community a vibrant, attractive destination to live, work, learn and play, we request annual partners for marketing sponsorships. We offer extensive sponsorship packages that fit your marketing goals and with a broad range of benefits creating long-term visibility across the Capital Region.
