CLASSES
HISTORIC VILLAGE
A Little Farmstead to Call Your Own
“The rooster crows outside your door as the first golden sunbeams of morning pass through the wrinkled glass of the eastern window and begin to dance across the rough-sawn floorboards. Your mattress shifts on the carefully woven rope web below you and crunches as you swing your legs over the edge of the bed and onto the chilly floor. You stretch and smile as you get ready to face the new day.”
If you are up for a one-of-a-kind adventure and not afraid of a little hard work, we have just the thing for you! This year we are once again offering five opportunities for families to set aside the modern pressures of life and live out their own pioneer story for a weekend as they experience what life may have been like for a family settling in the Genesee Country during the early 1800s. One family will be selected for each month to experience the opportunities, as well as the constraints, brought on by the rhythms of weather and seasonality.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis as long as space remains.
MacKay Dinners Are Filling Up Quickly!
Our new historic dining option, the MacKay Family Dinner, has been a big hit! Our May 31 date is already sold out, but there are still several options available. You’ll spend a cozy spring evening with good company enjoying a special three-course meal that includes dishes prepared using receipts (called recipes today) from early 19th-century cookbooks. Each dinner can accommodate up to 12 people. Available dates are: May 17, May 18, and June 1.
To reserve a MacKay House Family Dinner, call (585) 294-8218.
NATURE CENTER
Springing Into Fun at the Nature Center
Spring brings exciting new programming to the Nature Center, with opportunities for the whole family to jump in and enjoy the fun! The Adopt-a-Garden program gives families, scouts, and other groups the opportunity to get a hands-on experience — literally! Also in April, kids will enjoy some Salamander Shenanigans, exploring this species with our naturalists. Click the link below to find out more about what is springing up at Nature Sundays!

OTHER NEWS
A “Necessary” Update
GCV&M has been updating our restroom facilities! (Not our usual newsletter topic, but hey, everyone has to use them.) Thanks to the generosity of the Davenport-Hatch Foundation, Inc., the Depot/Freight House restrooms and East restrooms in the Village will finally be complete this month, with the exception of some paint, which must wait for warmer weather to be applied and dry properly. The Nature Center restrooms also have a fresh look and sleek new sinks as well, thanks to generous donations. You can see the huge difference this rehabilitation has made in the appearance of these facilities, and, as you might imagine, in their improved functioning. We are thrilled with the results!
