It’s Never Too Late to Return a Library Book A set of books that were due back in 1969, along with a lovely excuse note, were found in the Howe Branch book drop last week. Those books are 47 years overdue! But we’re grateful for their return and humbly accept the patron’s apology. The apology note that accompanied the returned book reads, in part, “I was taught that a book was like a precious piece of bread from God. You had to have clean hands, never write in books, never fold back pages, give back books on time and in the same condition you received the book in. Well! I say I am so hurt and disappointed in my 3 nieces & nephews and my 3 children which are now in their 60s.” We thank that patron for cleaning out the attic and unearthing those long-ago library books. And just in case you were wondering, no, we aren’t charging 40+ years in late fees! So, if you happen to be cleaning out an attic, a basement, or a kid’s room and find some overdue library books, please just bring them back to us. We’re happy to welcome those books back to the library. And we’ll work with you on figuring out a nominal fee for their lateness. |
