Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park will soon be more inviting. Construction has begun on the final improvement phase, expanding the formerly industrial 4-acre riverfront park. It will offer new ways to connect with the inspirational power of the Hudson River. New amenities include facilities for food trucks; a shaded plaza for informal dining; shade pavilions, lawns and a native-plant meadow; and a boardwalk and river overlook deck.
This wraps up a decade of work and a $16-million public-private investment. In 1996, Scenic Hudson purchased this old oil storage facility and junkyard, removing more than 75 dump-truck loads of debris, bricks, tires and scrap metal. Severely degraded wetlands were overrun with poison ivy and invasive plants. A cleanup approved by the NYS DEC made sure polluted soils were remediated.
Today, Long Dock Park has rehabilitated wetlands, a kayak/canoe beach and storage pavilion, waterside trails, picnic areas, and a fishing pier. A historic red barn was restored as Scenic Hudson’s River Center. It‘s home to the American Center for Folk Music. Mountain Tops Outfitters runs kayak rentals and Hudson River tours from the (architecture award-winning) kayak pavilion. Both facilities were designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It’s a fine addition to Beacon’s revitalization!
